This is the way to go
Following a two-year effort, two employees and two students of the Zenica Faculty of Mechanical Engineering have designed the first functional Bosnian RD Printer called ZEN3D. They are going to start up the company to manufacture their 3D Printers and offer job opportunities to young talents.
Kemal Arifović and Denis Spahić, Faculty employees, assisted by Harun Hrustić and Armin Bošnjak, students, have long been involved in 3D computer modeling and commercial 3D printers to finally design one of their own which they soon plan to place on the market.
ZEN3D is working by the „layer by layer“ model where melting plastics-based material are turned into the desired items. This 3D printer is professional and user-friendly device that could be used in development and industrial companies and educational institutions where a high level of stability and quality is expected, without any need of having technical knowledge of the device functional working.
Throughout his career at the Faculty Mr. Arifović has been working with 3D printers the Faculty procured back in 2008. Together with his colleagues he got the idea to make their own 3D printer because it is an „open source“ project that could be improved, modernized and marketed. Their 3D printer will be available at half the price of the same-class printers currently available in the market.
Another stunning fact about this unique project is that these people did it without any assistance or aid provided by any institution or company. They invested their own expertise, time and money and finally presented the results of their efforts at the IEEE Student and Young Professional Congress 2017 at the Sarajevo Burch University.
This printer features two heads and, as a novelty, both heads move across the X-Axis independently. The models marketed by the competition has also two heads but they move together regardless of which head is currently in use which causes dripping and adversely affects the quality of the print.
Arifović and Spahić are happy for being able to offer an opportunity to students Hrustić and Bošnjak, but hope there will be other young talented people who will work for their company in the future. Luckily, they have already got some calls by the companies and institutions planning to support the project and help develop its full potential.
This is certainly the way to go in the present time struggle to find one’s place under the sun for young people. We do hope we’ll more of such projects in the future.
