As part of the Engagement Global-sponsored program of cooperation between the German cities and their counterparts from South-East Europe, a delegation from Gelsenkirchen visited their sister city Zenica a few days ago.

Ms Melina Draws in charge of the city-to-city collaboration, Mr. Andreas Piwek heading the EU projects department and Mr. Heinz Meyer, chairman of the Zenica-Gelsenkirchen Friendship NGO undertook a three-day mission aimed at further development of a pilot project that envisages installation of the solar panels at the Zenica Scout Camp near Boracko Lake, Konjic.

Actually, this visit has a symbolic meaning of embarking on a new era of making linkages based on the use of renewable energy in all human activities, as laid down in the Agenda 2030 where local communities are ranking high in the implementation of the 17 sustainable development goals.

The youngsters of Gelsenkirchen and Zenica alike would learn how to use renewables and make their contribution to mitigate climate change effects and reduce pollution in their respective communities.

Partners to the project include the cities of Gelselnkirchen and Zenica, Zenica Scouts and Engagement Global.

In a three-day visit, our guests from Gelsenkirchen met with the Mayor of Zenica, visited a newly-built solar power station and the local economic development agency ZEDA, and made a tour of the Smetovi hill near Zenica where eco house is going to be built by using eco friendly materials.

In addition to the project-related activities, the delegation enjoyed the natural beauties of the Zenica and Konjic region.

The next meeting of the German and South-East European cities is going to take place in November in Sarajevo.
